ILAVENIL KAALAM ( Early summer Season)


The time taken by the earth to revolve around the sun is named as 
Perumpozhuthu ,it is divided into six seasons  namely  Kaar kaalam, Kulir kaalam, Munpani kaalam, Pinpani kaalam, Ilavenil kaalam, Mudhuvenil kaalam. We were experincing Pinpani  kaalam for a couple of months  and from Chithirai 1   (April 14 ) we are stepping into Ilavenil Kaalam which is extends from Chithirai to Vaigasi  ( Mid April to Mid june ).This transition period in seasons causes various changes in our body and causes severe illness. In order to prevent the occurrence of disease  and for a healthy living ,Siddha system has proposed certain modification in diet and lifestyle. 

Transition period:

  • The seasonal conduct from one season to another is termed as transition period ,a period of 14 days (i. e , last 7 days of the ongoing season and and the first seven days of the next season).
  • The seasonal conduct of the ongoing season should be stopped and the regimen of the next season should be gradually initiated during this transition period so as to help your body adapt to seasonal changes.
  • It is better to slowly change the lifestyle in order to prevent the occurrence of the diseases. 

 The following guidelines are advised to get adapted in Ilavenil Kaalam

Ilavenil Kaalam :

  • The period starts from Mid- April and ends Mid- June.
  • The South Monsoon Flows .
  • The Mangoes get ripen .
De arranged  Dhosa:

The Kapha that has increased in the latter winter worsens with the involvement of Pitham and causes Kapha diseases.

Diet and Lifestyle Changes  :

Diet :


  • Kaippu(Better), Karppu (Pungent ), Thuvarppu (Astringent ) are the preferred taste in this season which helps to neutralize the dearranged dhosa .
  • Take dry and warm foods.

  • Food made of old rice and dhal, cow’s ghee, vegetables and fruits the food consisting of all six tastes should be taken.
  • Snacks made of wheat, rice, groundnut, horse gram and ghee are advised for this season.
  • Banana, mango, jack and grape fruits with or without sugar cane juice, sugar candy, honey may be taken.
  • The fruit with sugar and honey could be preserved in the mud pots kept or placed in the earth-pits and consumed after a specific period of time.
  • The boiled water is poured into a new mud pot and the powders of honey, sandal or vetiver are added to it, cooled and used for drinking.

Lifestyle :


  • Physical manipulation (Thokkanam), maritial arts (Boxing) and fighting with sticks (Silambam).
  • Residence :The ideal cottage for this season is in a surrounding of flowery trees with good fragrance.

Preventive Measures :


  • Dearranged Kabam : Vamanam ( Emetic therapy ) and Nasiyam ( Nasal Application ) are advised in this season .
  • Oil Bath (Oleation therapy) should be given with oils the neutralize the dearranged Kabam. The oil application should be done for the head, trunk and the limbs and especially for the feet (Oleation Therapy ).
  • (Oil Bath ) Oleation therapy has to be followed by a bath with warm water and followed by the application of Agil(Aquilaria agallocha) and sandal (Santalum album)paste .
  • Pugai (Fumigation): Mild Fumigation is advised . 
Don’ts : 
  • Food that are sour, sweet, cold and oily are not preferable and sleep during day time is best avoided in early summer.
  • Food stuff with hot potency are to be avoided.
Taste suited for all seasons :
It is good to consume all the six tastes for all the six seasons . But it  is desirable to consume the specific taste as mentioned for the each Kaalam (season) specifically .
