How long your food takes to digest?
Digestion is the process by which your body breaks down food and pulls out the nutrients which your body need to operate.
Digestive system is made up of
1.Mouth
2.oesophagus
3.Stomach
4.Small intestine
5.Large intestine
Bowel transit time:
Stool is expelled from your body through your anus. The time it takes for food to travel from your mouth through your digestive tract to your anus is your bowel transit time. Sometimes, just the time it takes for food to travel through the colon is measured. This is called the colonic transit time.
The normal range of transit time is
1.Gastric emptying (2to 5 hrs)
2.Small bowel Transit (2to 6hrs)
3.Colonic Transit(10 -59 hrs)
4. Gut transit (10- 73 hrs) .
Siddha perspective:
The time consumption of food in general it takes about 24 - 72 hours to move through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) . The exact time depends on the type of food you have eaten , it also depends on the gender, metabolism ,and whether you have any digestive issues that could slow down or speed up your process.
According to Siddha,once the food has completed the digestive process waste is moved to the GIT for the removal from the body and what is left is called Saaram or Nutrient Fluid .
This Nutrient fluid is then carried to each of the seven tissue layer which get nourished in the following order to the
1. Saaram (lymph or palsma)
2. Senneer (Blood)
3.oon ( Muscle)
4.Koluppu( Fat)
5 .Enbu( Bones)
6. Moolai( Bonemarrow)
7.Sukilam (Reproductive).
Food and their duration of digestion: Siddha aspect
The duration of digestion of food according to siddha literature are as follows
1. Cold water - 3 hours
2.Hot water - 6 hours
3. Luke warm water - 1 hr 12 mins
4. Fruit juices - 2 hrs 24 mins
5. Rice - 6 hrs
7. Milk - 8 hrs
8. Honey - 4 hrs 48mins
9. Fruits - 3 hrs
10. Jaggery - 8 hrs
11. Curd rice - 4 hrs 24 mins
12. Butter milk Rice - 5 hrs 12 mins
13 . Butter with Rice - 6 hrs
And Some siddha preparation and their duration of digestion
1. Kashayam - 1 hr
2. Legium - 12 hrs
3. Girutham - 12 hrs
4 .Parpam - 1 hr 24 mins
5. Chooram - 4 hrs.
Digestive problems are the basis of almost all diseases. If the digestive system works well and properly, many of the diseases can be prevented and the problems that have already occurred can be eliminated.
Eat your food slowly and chew each bite properly to facilitate proper digestion.
