SIDDHA DIET FOR REGULAR MENSTRUAL CYCLE
What is a menstrual cycle? Menstruation is the periodic shedding of endometrium. The menstrual cycle is the hormonal driven cycle; Day 1 is the first day of your period (bleeding) while day 14 is the approximate day you ovulate and if an egg is not fertilized, hormone levels eventually drop and at about day 25; the egg begins to dissolve and the cycle begins again with the period at about day 30. Menstruation begins day 1 and normally ends days 3-5 of the menstrual cycle. Cycles can range anywhere from 21-35 days. The rise and fall of levels of hormones during the month control the menstrual cycle.
What are the signs and Symptoms?
1. Muscles cramps
2. Pains low in the abdomen
3. Bloating
4. Swelling in the abdomen
5. Constipation
6. Diarrhea
7. Acne
8. Tiredness
9. Mood swings
What are the Hormones responsible for menstrual cycle?
The changes during the cycle are due to four hormones,
progesterone, estrogens, FHS (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone).
Siddha Diet:
It is customary for women in TamilNadu to be given special health foods for atleast 6 months following puberty .This habit has now disappeared and has been reduced to the ritual of giving during the Menstruation . It is good to take this diet which has been practiced for centuries, once or twice daily . It is very important not to change the order of Sesame, Black gram and Fenugreek .
Day 1-5: Sesame seeds (எள்ளு, Sesamum indicum)
Sesame seed Balls( எள்ளு உருண்டை): Ingredients:
White Sesame seeds – 1 cup
Jaggery – ¾ cup
Cardamom – as required
Procedure:
Roast the 1cup of white sesame seeds until it turns brown and grind in well ,add ¾ cup of jaggery mix well and add cardamom mix well and make it into balls.
Medicinal use:
The white sesame seeds are rich in phytoestrogen which promotes the menstrual bleeding. Those women who attained menopause will lack estrogen and sesame seed which balances the estrogen in them .
Day 6-14: Black gram( உளுந்து , Vinga mungo)
Black gram pudding ( உளுந்தங்களி): Ingredients:
Raw samba rice – 1 cup
(Whole )Black gram – ½ cup
Palm Jaggery – As required
Cardamom – As required
Gingelly oil – 2 Table spoon
Procedure:
Roast the raw samba rice and whole black gram and make it as a powder. Take a pan add water and palm Jaggery make it into a syrup add the mixture and 2 Tablespoon of gingelly oil mix and make it as a pudding (களி).
Medicinal use:
The black gram which reduces the abdominal pain, body pain, and muscle cramps during the menstrual period.
Day 15 -28: Fenugreek seed (வெந்தயம் , Trigonella Foenum-Graecum )
Fenugreek Porridge (வெந்தயக் கஞ்சி): Ingredients:
Raw samba Rice – 4 Cup
Fenugreek seed – 1 Cup
Water- As required
Procedure:
Roast the Raw samba rice and Fenugreek seed , add sufficient amount of water and make it into a porridge.
Medicinal use:
The Fenugreek seed which regulates the Hormonal imbalance and menstrual cycle.
Eating this diet will eliminate infertility; Preventing ovarian tumors; The hallmark of this diet is that it does not require hysterectomy.
This diet will help to increase the number of healthy children in the community through a healthy diet. “The health of a country is fundamental to the health of a women in a country” .
